PARISH’S SACRAMENTAL AND PRAYER LIFE

We congratulate those who celebrated the Sacrament of Marriage in our church last weekend:

Chad Michael Flynn and Jennifer Danielle Forte

August 27, 2010

(James 5:13, 14)

Pray for the sick:

TWENTY THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

This past spring our parish added a new organization to the list of opportunities for investing our time and talent – the Saint Vincent Martyr Gardening Club. One could even consider this a ministry as it really is about being stewards of God’s creation! Some of the fruits of their labor can be seen at the front and back entrances of the church – in my mind, award winning planters! Another of the projects this dedicated group of parishioners took on was the back porch of the rectory. After filling the planters there with some soil and compost they put in several plantings, making the space quite beautiful. Little did we know, however, that hidden in the compost were some tomato seeds. You guessed it – by midsummer we had our very own tomato plants producing very tasty tomatoes. Some of the folks who know about growing vegetables (I think a tomato is a vegetable) said that it is not easy to grow the plants from seeds. But it sure did happen here with the right combination of folks investing time and talent and God’s good sunshine and rain upon their efforts.

In his teaching, Jesus often spoke about seeds and plantings, vines and vineyards, wheat and harvest. Using these images our Lord challenges us to grow God’s Kingdom in our lives and our families, in our church and in our world. Indeed the Lord has sown the seeds of faith, hope and love in our midst. He calls us to tend this planting through our prayer and action, relying on the grace of God to bring fruit to our humble efforts. This is what we strive to do here at Saint Vincent Martyr as we seek to grow the Church that the Lord has given us to steward. Next weekend I will be addressing our parish community regarding our growth as a parish through our ENVISION process and other good things that are happening here at the parish. God is blessing us in so many ways here at Saint Vincent Martyr Church and School, and among the greatest of those blessings are each of you.

I am happy to share with you the good news that God has sent us another worker in His vineyard here at Saint Vincent Martyr. Deacon Robert Morton will be joining our pastoral staff on Monday, September 13 to begin his ministry at our parish. Deacon Bob was ordained to the diaconate in 2001 and served the faith community at Saint Clement in Rockaway, his home parish, for the past nine years. Bob is a convert to the Catholic faith and was received into the Church through the RCIA process. He has been married to his wife Eileen for forty years and they have three children and two grandchildren. He is a full time employee of MEDCO and currently serves on the Paterson Diocese Diaconate Formation and Leadership Committees. His ministry at the parish will include the Baptismal Preparation program and serving as staff liaison to the Social Outreach Community. He will also be working with me on the formation of a welcoming ministry for the parish. As a deacon, Bob will preside at some of our baptisms and weddings and occasionally preach at our Eucharistic celebrations. I know that he and Eileen will be a blessing to our community and we look forward to welcoming them later this month.

As summer draws to a close and fall, the time of harvest, unfolds, I trust that God’s bounty will continue to be great in our parish – we have the right combination – God’s amazing grace and a parish family truly invested in tending what He has planted!

Msgr. George

Are you looking for a way to share your gift of faith? Then prayerfully consider being a catechist in the Christian Faith Formation Program.

A catechist is a person who facilitates the process of religious formation as an instructor, leader and role model. A catechist has an understanding of Catholic teaching, Scripture and Catholic Tradition. This role is a volunteer ministerial one in which a person has made a commitment to the Church’s liturgical and sacramental life. They are able to effectively build strength of character based on moral teachings and the life of Christ. A catechist helps the desire of faith to grow in each child uniquely through their generosity of spirit and love of the Lord. A catechist enjoys working with children, demonstrates patience and kindness, and has creativity. Does this sound like you or someone you know?

One can offer their services regularly or on an as needed basis to our programs on Sundays and/or Monday, with children in grades from Pre-Kindergarten through eighth grade. Training and direction is available, and so are the materials to instruct. Help is provided so we are asking for yours! Contact Denise Stefanelli for further information at (973)377-4000 ext 251 or denise.stefanelli@svmnj.org. Thank you in advance for your consideration.

Interested in Becoming a Catholic?

Want to join our Church?  Do you have questions about the Catholic Faith?

Have you been attending Mass for years but never been Baptized or initiated into the Catholic Community?

Are members of your family or friends Catholic and you are curious about their faith?

If any of these questions describe your situation, you might want to join our RCIA Inquiry this fall.  The Inquiry Period is a time to formally ask questions of our faith community.  What do Catholics believe?  Why?  Who is God? How is God active in my life?  What does it mean to be a member of the community? How can I pray?

In the Inquiry stage you are just finding out about Jesus, Christianity and the Catholic Church.  What if you are not sure that you want to become Catholic?  That’s fine, too!  RCIA begins with Inquiry.  At the end of inquiry, you decide if you want to learn more about the Catholic Faith. This is the beginning of a search for answers and information about how God is working in your life.

RCIA Inquiry for those thinking about joining the Catholic Church is offered by our parish community.  These are informal weekly sessions that provide opportunities for the inquirer to ask his/her questions about the Catholic faith.  A team of staff and volunteers from the parish community, along with other inquirers, are ready and willing to explore these questions with you. Drop-ins are always welcome.  RCIA Inquiry sessions will begin on Thursday Sept. 9 at 7:30 p.m. in the Media Center of our Parish Center (2nd Floor) and will continue every Thursday for the month of September. For more information, please contact Jan Figenshu at 973-377-4000 ext. 253 or Jan.Figenshu@svmnj.org.

Bereavement Ministry

Blessed are they who mourn, for they shall be comforted. To support and rejuvenate the spirit, a fall social is planned for September 12 from 3:00 – 4:30 p.m. for those who have experienced the recent significant loss of a loved one. The informal gathering at St. Vincent’s Ministry Center will be an opportunity to join together with others in similar circumstances. Family members and friends are welcome to accompany participants. If a neighbor, friend or co-worker may benefit from such a gathering, please bring this to his/her attention. All are welcome. RSVP to Jan Figenshu, ext 253 by September 5.
